The Schmidts Institute

Life is complicated, but getting support doesn't have to be.

Individual counseling and outdoor Walk & Talk sessions for English-speaking expats, professionals, and parents in The Hague (Den Haag) and across the Netherlands. Available online or in person.

The Schmidts Approach to Mental Wellness

Counseling with me is a conversation. My style is direct and warm. I'll challenge you when that's what's needed, and I'll sit with you when things get hard. I work to make the space feel like somewhere you can actually relax and be your true self, because people are more honest when they're not on guard.

We'll work together to understand what's challenging you and find practical ways through it. Some sessions will be heavy. Others will surprise you with how light they feel. But every conversation is pointed in the same direction, toward the version of yourself you're trying to get to.

You don't have to have anything figured out before you get in touch. That's what I'm here for.

Practice Information

The Schmidts Institute is a private-pay mental health counseling practice serving expats, adults, couples, and families in English. Services are provided independently and are not part of the Dutch GGZ (geestelijke gezondheidszorg) system.

I am licensed as a social worker in the United States and am not registered under the Dutch BIG Act. The practice does not provide services as a BIG-registered psychologist or psychotherapist, and services are not billed through the Dutch basic health insurance system.

Professional Standards & Complaints

The Schmidts Institute is a member of the Nederlandse Federatie Gezondheidszorg (NFG) and participates in the complaints and disputes arrangements provided through NFG under the Wkkgz.

I believe that clients should feel comfortable raising concerns directly with me. If you have a concern about your counseling experience, I encourage you to discuss it with me first so that we have an opportunity to work toward a resolution.

If we are unable to resolve the concern together, you have access to the formal NFG complaints procedure. I can provide you with information about how to access this process.

You can learn more about NFG and its complaints procedure at www.de-nfg.nl.
